My inspiration for this design, as I said in a previous post, was a photo I took of the ceiling inside the Pantheon in Rome, Italy.  I am including the photo in this blog.

With the CarpetVista competition the theme was sustainability using wool.  They said that they did not want a lot of shading as it would be hard for them to produce.  I kept that in mind while designing this carpet along with the idea of using wool.  They also said they wanted something modern which I think I have created even though my inspiration was something that was built between A.D. 117-138.

You had your choice of designing a square, round or rectangular shape carpet.  Instead of doing just one shape, I wanted to show them that my design could be used for any of the three shape’s, so I did all three.  The grey squares had to be adjusted somewhat to fit the shape, but basically the squares are the same size from carpet to carpet.   The colors of this carpet design can be changed to fit the space it will be going in.   The most difficult shape for me to create was the round carpet and that is because I never realized how hard it is to put something square (the squares in the carpet) into something round.  I changed the positioning several times and finally settled on the one here.

Feedback from family and friends was mostly the same.  I asked them if they would buy the carpet and they all said they would.  I asked my sister after positioning the squares on the round carpet what she thought each time and I did listen to her feedback.  I would always listen to feedback.  If I was working for this company or any other company and my boss asked me to change something (whether I agreed with it or not) I would change it especially if my paycheck depended on it.

This has been my favorite assignment so far.  From the very beginning I started sketching as I had so many ideas in my head as you could tell from my preliminary sketches.  I didn’t pick this competition, it picked me.
